In the three months I worked at blockbuster, I got three silver roosevelt dimes, 2 silver nickels, and two wheat pennies. One of the silver nickels was in Fine condition, and the dimes were also in good shape.

At another video store, years ago, I got a mercury dime out of the cash register. It was in Good condition.

My 14 year old son has been into coin collecting recently and will buy boxes of pennies from the bank to look through. He has picked up a fair number of wheat pennies but recently came across a 1909 Indian Head cent. The condition is XF+ and probably worth $16. This is older than anything I have found MD'ing.

chaos...

ive heard of kids stealing there parents coin collections and spending them on candy so i guess its not too bad being a cashier

This is very true. I used to be an assistant manager at a local hardware store and got a call one day from a very irate mother. She asked if we had cashed any half dollar rolls from a young man (if I remember about 16 YOA) in the last few days. Of course, having worked the night before, I remember depositing 2 rolls of half dollars at the bank with the rest of the deposit. This is when I learned that the kid had taken them from his fathers collection and they were all Franklin halves! Of course, I booted myself in the rear end for having not checked the rolls. The lady went on to yell at me and told me that it was unprofessional for my clerks to cash in rolls of money from juveniles. I turned the table on her and gave her an earful for not raising her kid properly (maybe this was why I got into law enforcement?!?!?!?!?). Anyway, she hung up. I asked the cashier (who happened to be the one working the day before) about cashing the coins in and she indeed said that it was a teenaged boy.

If only I would have checked the rolls...... oh well!

Beetle,

Maybe we'll get lucky and find a roll of 1895 P Morgan Dollars under that old church.

That would be sweet retirement for both of us!!!!!!

SILVER HALF IN CIRC

I CASHED A CHECK AT THE BANK THIS WEEK AND NOTICED A SILVER KENNEDY HALF IN HER TRAY.I GOT ALL 10 HALFS THAT SHE HAD OF THEM 1 WAS A SILVER 64 AND THERE WERE 3 40%ERS (66 67&67)NOT BAD HUH?

Good to hear from you Midus1!!! I realized that was you the other day who passed me (in the cruiser). Sorry I didn't recognize you sooner I might have managed a better wave!

Anyway, things are starting to warm up! Looks like some lower fifties later this week! I'm getting the itch! And the ground is saturated as well. Let's plan on something within the next few weeks or so. I can't wait to hit the church site. I just have a gut feeling about. I don't think anyone has been over it (at least not to the churches knowledge or anytime recently). Did you say you wanted them Morgans in uncirculated condition?!?!? (LOL)

We also need to hit the old house below SPP Church on the Crossroads. I did go over some of it quickly this past fall. The church bought the property and we can go whenever. This is the place that served as a bar during the 50's and 60's. I did find an old pocketknife that didn't clean up at all (went in the garbage). I know there has to be some "loose change" floating around this place as well.

I'm still scouting area and have found some sites of interest, but have yet to ask / acquire permission to hunt. All within the county. When I do, I'll be sure to let you know. Any place I get, you're more than welcome to come along!

We really should try to organize some sort of club. I think there is enough interest based on what I see / hear from people. Shannon (the one whose Dad's house we went to in Cynthiana) is in the process of buying a detector (he's not married  ) and is itching to get out as well. I know he will go out whenever asked. I think he has settled for the Pioneer 202, which is also the one I'm looking forward to purchasing some day (looks like a new roof for the Beetle Mansion this spring  )

Keep in touch and be safe!

someone used silver dollars to buy gas

A couple of days ago I went down into NC to visit some family. On the way back I stopped at a gas station to get a drink. The owner of the store is sitting behind the counter looking at a pretty ragged 2 dollar bill. I see it and say it to bad about its condition. He tells me its from 1930 something. I told him it was'nt really worth much because its in bad shape. I then told him I collected coins. He then looks at me and asks me to look at something. He has 2 1922 silver dollars that some moron bought gas with. They gave him 2 silver dollars in very good condition for 2 bucks in gas. I'd guess they were worth at least $10 a piece if not more. He of course had no interest in getting rid of them. I wish I could be so lucky.

Beetle,

I'll take that particular year Morgan in any condition.

I think we should talk about a club for our area. I know at least 5 more guys that detect and it would be great to plan a trip to a good site with ten or more people.

If you are doing the roof work yourself, send me an e-mail and I'll give you a hand.

By the way I got a 1957 and 1941 wheaty in change last week. I think that's the first time I've got old money back in change. Good old Walmart.

Be safe

Midus

Ever since I was young I rooted through my pocket change. Over the years I got a bunch of wheaties 2 silver quarters 1 buffalo nickel 1 merc dime 2 rosies and 1 1898 50 cent piece. I keep them in an old tin on my dresser and just add when I find them. The only old coin I found with m/d was and Indian head cent can?t read date though never cleaned it. That was found with a junk all vision pro at a place that the locals use as a neighborhood ball field. My wife?s grand father said he use to play there as a kid so I can?t waits to get there with this garret I just bought. The toy had a max depth of about three inches should do a lot better with garret. After I learn to use it that is. (LOL Me NOOB)

My wife ownes a business with a pop machine in it & out of habit I always check the coin return. Imagine my surprise when I pulled a 1964 silver Rosie out of it one day. Nothing big but still silver in circulation in 2003. Ron

Snake said: One day I got 6 Susan B Anthonys

Last April I got 16 Susan B Anthonys from the stamp vending machine at the post office. I thought it was a pain in the A** having to deal with them
They worth more than a dollar?

I just started working at an ABC store. I heard today of a person at another store who got an 1898 cent in change.

I was at the cash register today, and some old guy had to give me change. He pulls a few coins out of his pocket, and I spy a silver quarter in his hand. Unfortunately, he only owed me 6 cents, and had exact change. I pointed the quarter out to him, hoping that he would give it to me, he didn't, but was pretty excited that it may be worth alot. Oh well, maybe next time...

That's a good try anyways MDnoob! As we metal detector pimps all know, quarters from 1964 and before contain real silver!

Today I got a 1927 buffalo nickel at work. The fact that you can read the date at all is impressive. I have found a few others over the years, but they were dateless...

Silver in change

I got a 1962 quarter last year but the best (well ,almost) was a few years ago I was buying a half-rack at a local convienience store. Somehow I got into a conversation about money with the cashier and she reached into her pocket and pulled out what appeared the be a BRAND NEW 1935 $5.00 silver certificate. She had no idea what it was but thought it "looked valuable" I offered her a 10 spot for the bill which she started to hand over then took back. I was hoping it was worth at least ten but the almost new condition was the plus. It was folded but could have been steamed and flattend without any damage.
