Any help would be appreciated. This fell out of a MWR today; the only find out of a box.

Which leads me to two other questions:

1) Are there telltale signs that a coin has been cleaned, vs. no/low circulation?
2) Is there any value to common date AG coins with high grading? Or does this belong in the pile with the rest of the CRH finds?

Thanks!

Looks XF to AU. Hard to tell from a scan. Look for nice sharp edges/rims on unc coins. Also, look for any signs of wear on the design. Your's looks like a little wear on the bottom of the torch on the reverse and some wear on FDR's hair.

As to premium. The mints made about 2.5 billion dimes in 1964 between them. Unless it's super high grade (certified, MS-67+) add it to the pile.

Still silver!

Forgot to answer your cleaning question. Coins that have wear on them and are still shiny (often too shiny) have probably been cleaned. The other thing you will see is scratches from someone shining them up. The scratches may be very fine (often called hairlines), and can be from just rubbing a cloth across the coin. Just because a coin is shiny, doesn't mean it's uncirculated. Look for signs of wear. And like I said in the other post, the rims don't lie. On a BU coin, the rims will be sharp, you can feel the sharpness with your finger on the edge of the coin.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks a ton - very helpful.

Really sharp edges. Maybe a bit of wear on the top half of the "LIBE" on the obverse. Will see if I can get anything sharper with the macro setting on my camera.

Sounds like a coin for the book - appreciate the notes!
