1968 Canadian Quarters... was it a bumper crop year for them or something?

I ask this because lately in my hunting I've been running into a horde of them. No 50% silver ones... just the Nickel ones. Before this I was finding pennies, pennies, pennies but now over the last 1/2 week at a variety of sites I've been finding more and more 1968 Canadian quarters and well yes I'm in Canada so that does make some sense... still... this one specific year... why?

Any thoughts?

Looking at the mintage figures, you see that they made more than three times as many as they had in any year up to that point. Slightly under half of them were the 50 percent silver variety.

That's funny I have that with the 45 and 46 wheat pennies lol.

The made so many because half were silver and half were clad. Guess they figured all the silver would be snatched up by collectors. I found a 68 clad eight inches down at an old school in Mississippi.
