Hiya,

Whilst searching my first stash of halves today;

I kept pulling tons of 1971 D and Bicentennial Halves out as the sides REALLY looked like they had heavy silver content.
The were no "S" markings on either but the Bi's had a funky looking kind of "X" or something up on Kenny's collar and no mint mark elsewhere.
I threw them back like a small fish.

What gives?
Are these any good at all, and why do they stand out?

Thanks!

OH, and also;

the banks are selling me bagged coins, not rolled.

Is this a good or bad thing for finding silver coins?

Thanks X2!

Most appreciated.
However,

Seems to me like I found a LOT of BI's with no mint mark shown below, but only the small "X" on his neck.

What say ye to this?

If there is no 's' then it is not a proof, and they do not have any silver in them either. Nothing special you have there. Just clad.

Most appreciated.

That picture you have posted there has an S mint mark and could be silver, but not all S mints are silver. I have a 1976s clad. The x on the neck is just some initials. The no mint mark is Philadelphia. Does your dump bank have a counting machine or are you re-rolling them?

If there is no mint mark on the coin then it was minted in Philly. The little X mark on the collar is the sig of the engraver. Sometimes you can find errors that are missing the sig. 71s and bicentennial years are the most common do to very few 1970 halves minted, and the bicentennials being minted for 2 years (75 and 76). There might be other sites than what was linked earlier for finding out this info. You might want to consider doing a little research with some google searches to find out if you are missing anything.
