Hello everyone, I was CRH last year and came across this Kennedy Half. The obverse and reverse are identical in tone (dark). Can anyone explain why or how this discoloration happens? 20160505_210559.webp

Close-up pics of both the Obverse and Reverse, taken in natural light are needed to make any determination.

As a general rule, abnormal coloring of a coin is an environmental issue. The coin probably came in continuous contact with something chemically acidic.....paper, plastic, cloth, liquids, etc.

Or missing the Cladding or an improperly annealed planchet (i.e. sintered).
