2 excavated 1812 buttons. Has this been seen before?

I know that they are Rifle and 2nd artillery. The brass clips serve a purpose. Has this "jury-rigging" been seen before?
Does it add or subtract to their value? Are the brass clips 1812 vintage? Sooooo many questions!

Any thoughts?

Does the original shanks remain under the rigs? And if so maybe the rigs were used to display these buttons.
