One thing of interest is that Pactola Lake(Which might be named after a small camp/village/town of Pactola) and Black Hills are both near each other in South Dakota. On google maps, this puts it only a 6 hour drive from Denver, CO. Maybe 2 days on horseback? There's defintely some interesting geography looking at the area on google earth.
