So, from the back we know: 1838-1846 by the Wadhams & Webster Company of Wolcottville CT.
But I can't tell what's on the front, so I can't say for sure if whether it's civilian or military.

I think the front picture is upside down. I tried to adjust it but it's a little out of focus.
