This was my first year detecting I got my detector in april and only detected local parks until july 23rd, when I moved into a 230 year old house then the cool finds started happening, lol I stopped doing parks in Aug. so my clad finds dropped very fast.

year's finds, 240 yr. old house

Hi JD,

I've been reading your posts for a while now.. Great finds... I've been hunting for 20 yrs., and recently purchased a 204 yr. old home on 10 acres. It is about 1 mile from a very large rev. war fort site, Ticonderoga.

The house has a ton of history. Used as a stage coach stop, tavern, and meeting hall. My wife and I both hunt, and in 2 years the finds have been strange. 3 large cents, 1 walk. lib half, and the rest 1930 and up... I know for sure there is alot more there but the sq. nails and junk must be masking most of it.. The site has never been hunted, and I'm sure fill has been added.

Any ideas for spring.. Currently have 3'+ of snow...

By the way, awesome finds, keep it up.

SW just keep doing your yard over and over again, the first day at my house i went to the biggest tree in the yard and found a 1938 qtr, 1934 dime, and 3 wheats, for 3 weeks they were the only coins i found in the yard i was very disappointed then i got a hit 1 in. down dug and it was a 1843 large cent, for 1 more month i found nothing then i dug a big piece of iron out of the ground and right next to it was 1874,1876 ih pennies, i thought i got everything out of the ground then Chiz came over and we started detecting the yard and bam 1889 morgan, 1943 walk lib half, ben franklin half, 3 silver dimes! and I thought i got everything 2 weeks ago it was sunny i had 30 min. to dig so i went to the big tree to get the junk metal out and 10 min. later i pulled out a 1914 barber dime i dont know how i missed it the first time. good luck i hope you find many more coins there J.D.

MBnoob, In june I was still learning my detector and I was at an old house at a lake and got a large hit 9in. down , I didnt dig it because all the same hits before were iron, well after 3 days at the house I took my son and his friend and they were driving me crazy so I decided to let them did out the big "iron" hit I kept avoiding, so I found the spot and had them dig and about 10 min. later I heard screaming and in the hole was a broken bottle and hundreds of silver dimes. thats how I found it and that was my first lesson that you must dig everything. Hey JD, keep it up! I'm starting to look at real estate in your neck of the woods!
Been doing this for a dozen years and have not yet had a year near that in terms of old coinage. Not many do.

Hey SW, sounds like you have a dream house! Start out by doing a grid search. Set up a spot 10 - 15 feet square and dig everything as deep as you can detect in all modes and see what you come up with. Doing this in a couple remote sites really helped me reach the paydirt through the trash after clearing the first 6" of dirt. I've done this in a local park in one small area too and have found that there is great stuff down there but you have to clear the spot by layers and remove every even slight signal to hit those deep targets. Remember, a small staple at a half inch will mask that SL dime 6" under it pretty much regardless of what machine you use.

You guys are great.. I can tell we have the same love for metal detecting.. I've been hunting for 20 years and have found over 5,000 coins.. The best is an 1837 bust half.. I found it in a field, 2", and the coin is incredible.. As close to UNC as it gets.. Remember, no spot is ever done, and front yards are far better than back yards.

Believe it or not, one of the reasons I bought the house I did is because of its age and history.. The three large cents I've found were all at 2", and all had square nails in the same hole... Every hole I've dug has produced sq. nails, coin or not. I am an avid coin collector, so I know the coins I hope to find.. A 1795 $5 gold piece would probably give me a heart attack.

I figure the junk and square nails are keeping me from finding the better stuff. This spring I am going to have my neighbor scrape 6-8" of top soil off the front yard, (if my wife doesn't kill me). I think this will prove quite interesting.

For me, metal detecting is boder-line addiction.. Perhaps this coming spring you guys could pay a visit.. All that is around is empty fields, and old cellar holes all over the place.

Hey SW, if you're gonna scrape the top half foot of dirt then hunt, after finding three large sents at 2", then bag that removed dirt and sell it in 25 lb. lots!

I'll take two! Yes those nails are masking good stuff, but that old coin may be two inches under a bent nail that's an inch deep. Gotta take the time to do a real grid search to give you some idea of what's in a representative sample area before going to the grader. Once you've cleared a small area to your satisfaction and found the deepest possible target of any kind, then you'll have an idea of how far or much you may want to remove before hitting paydirt.

Keep us up on how it's going, that snow won't last forever! 50+ in Chicagoland today!

2" large cents

Hey Lowbatts,

The two bags of dirt are on the way, gratus.... Just kidding... I am pretty sure those three coins came from dirt from the cellar that was spread on the front lawn.. I spoke with a prior owner and he told me this was done in the early 70's.. It would also explain why they are in great shape.. Normal wear, but no corrosion at all.

How deep are the coins you have been finding at the 240 yr. old house. It seems that if the house was occupied throughout it's history, these targets would be driven pretty deep.. Also, in an area like this there should be a ton of junk as well?

All the coins I have found have been fairly shallow in fact all my good coins have been 1-3 in. down i found 1 draped bust cent 9 in. down that was the deepest all 3 silver dollars i'v found have been less than 2 in. down. The 2 spanish 1 reales I found 1773,1781 were less than 1 in. in the ground, the landlords son detected this house before i moved in im just picking up the straglers, he found seated dimes, barber quarters, barber dimes and many IH pennies I have about 5 diff locations I dig, At this house i only found 2 IH pennies 1874,1876, 1 large cent 1843, 1 barber dime 1914, 1 1938 buffalo, 1 1938 quarter, 1 1889-0 morgan, 1 walking lib,1 ben fran, some misc dimes, thats all the coins found in this yard most of my old coins have been found at another site.
