2009 penny

my brother was looking through his penny collection today and came across a 2009 penny, on the back their is a guy reading a book setting on a log with a splitting wedge and mallet. has anyone else come across one of these? we thought it was odd. after going through about $100 worth of pennies their was only ONE coin with this description.

There are 4 different reverses for the 2009 cents showing different stages of Lincolns life. This was done to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Lincoln cent. This is the only year they did it and in 2010 they changed to the shield reverse they use now. They are not rare but people save them so they don't turn up all that often.

It was also for the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, the original Lincoln cent was for the 100th anniversary! Then they have changed the design every 50 years. Wheat (1909-1958), Memorial (1959-2008), Shield (2010-present).

the image on the penny is the one on the top right of nhbandit's pics. thanks for the pics , I've never seen the 2009 lincoln penny before today, with that image. I knew someone on the forum would know.

Go ahead and weigh the cent. Most likely, it will be a zincoln planchet, but in an offering to collectors (mint/proof/and commemorative sets), the cents were minted on a planchet composed of the original alloy in 1909. Mint sets are broken open and placed into circulation everyday. You might have gotten lucky with a copper cent.
