8 or 10k gold can get pretty corroded if the conditions are right. It is not the gold that corrodes, obviously, it's the copper in the alloy. I have no idea if your ring is gold or not, just saying.

I don't know if it can get as bad as the one in the pic, but if you figure that 7/12 of the 10k metal is something other than gold (copper, usually), there's a lot of room for corrosion. If the garbage dump was very acidic it could have done this.

Neat find, anyway.

Yeah it doesn't quite have that "brass" look to it, you might have gold there. I can't wait to hear what you find out!
