I went and picked up my second $500 box of halfs today. My girlfriend and I went to the local park and sorted them quickly. Nothing. El Skunko.
All the rolls had been opened on the bottom and repacked. This was the second box this way. No more going to that bank I guess.
So we were in the process of dropping the coins into a coin machine at another bank when I heard the sound of Ike dollars being dropped into a plastic can. I turned around and, at a desk across the lobby there was a man sitting there with a bank rep making a deposit of coins in a plastic container. She took the container over to a teller. i went over and could see the jug had Ikes and halfs in it. I asked if I could buy them. the teller said sure, after they counted them. As they were counting the bank rep set two halfs aside. I could see they were silver. They were too far away to tell if they were 90's or not.
Then the rep says to the teller she can sell me the rest, switched to Spanish(!), and told her not to sell me the two halfs, she wanted them! then she walked away with the man's deposit slip.
I politely mentioned to the teller "She said not to sell me those two. eh?" She looked surprised that a long-haired redneck looking Anglo could speak a little Spanish. "Yeah, we do that all the time. She pays my drawer back and keeps the ones she wants."
I certainly don't begrudge the tellers and bank people getting the coins, but damn! Right in front of me? Dirty pool, says I! At least have the decency to do it out of the public's eye.
To add insult to injury, when I got home I found that the teller had counted the $5 piles of halfs as $10 piles and I was gypped $20. I left a message with the mangaer to check the drawer and please get back to me. I doubt if I'll hear back at all.
The day wasn't a total loss. My coin shop sold me 9 SAE's, a 10 ounce bar, a Morgan and a Peace dollar for under spot and no tax.
