4/22/07 halves & nickels
Not as much free time today but still got some decent searchin' in. From $600 in halves I got two 67's and a 1974-S proof. And from $40 in nickels was the following -
1941
1941-S (large S, keeper!)
1949
1953-S
1955-D (2)
1958-D (3)
Canadian: 2001-P
Now that Canadian is a puzzler. In 1999 Canada starting experimenting with a new alloy, eventually settling on nickel plated steel which was fully implemented in 2002 in all nickels, dimes, quarters and halves. The new alloy can be distinguished by a "P" below the queen's portrait.
Here's what's puzzling. Test coins of this new alloy were made in 1999, 2000 & 2001 but in very small quantities. In fact, my latest price guide (Jan. 2007) lists the value of a 2001-P nickel as "ND" which they say means "No Data." Looking in my big 2006 catalog of world coins, the mintage is given as 136,650 which would make it not only the lowest mintage I've ever found CRH, but the lowest mintage in my entire collection!
Anyone know more info about these "test" coins?
