Dug these up with the Vaquero today, along with the usual trash and a handful of clad. Anyone recognize the big coin? Hit like a large coin, but looked like an old can lid, 'till I noticed the square hole. This thing was buried about 8" down, at the top of a SoCal mountain.. Weird.

Sweet, great finds again here Pinenut! The Vaquero is going to find you Gold soon feel it in my bones.

No idea what that is but it sure is a cool find!
Be interesting to find out what the characters say!

could be a lucky charm..

It shows a phoenix and a dragon on one side so it's probably a lucky charm amulet, not a coin.
I asked in the "what is it?" forum, and that's what came up. Not sure how old it is, but it must have been there for a while, at 8" deep.

If it's a lucky charm/amulet you should put it on your favorite detector.
Then it'll have super Kung-fu detecting powers.:headbang:

Top of mountain,wow!
Most folks don't realize that we have REAL mountains in SoCal. One local mountain is 11,000 feet above sea level.
Ice House saddle would be a great hunt, if you know where thats located.
Great find.

Have it checked out. Authentic old ones go for $100 or more.

wow that suckers HUGE !!! good luck finding out;];];] let us know ;'];];] maybe its from a chinese mining camp and that was their mining tags when they leave to go undergrd?

Checked my copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins, and it appears this type of coinage dated to the late 19th century into the early 20th. Agree the reverse may mean this is a luck piece rather than a true coin.

it's now on display..

Thanks, folks!
No matter to me what it's worth, but I had fun finding it. Got it hanging on the side of my house with a small nail.
Hoping for more good luck.. :icon_sunny:

Old post from 2017 but would like to answer what the coin says. As mentioned in above messages it is a coin for good fortune.

The Chinese idiom on the front of the coin is the following:
Simplified: 龙凤呈祥
Traditional: 龍鳳呈祥
Pinyin: long feng cheng xiang.

Meaning: The dragon and the phoenix bringing prosperity - extremely good fortune.

Very cool; thank you for this! The coin is still hanging on the side of my house.

Don't know. But I have seen similar in the past. Hoping it is valuable!

Thanks, but I’ve no intention of selling it or even having it appraised. If I do, then where would my luck go..?

I thought I would do a follow up on this post to add information. Also hoping to get past full member status by posting more messages :-).

龙凤呈祥 Came from the Han Dynasty in a book called 《孔丛子》kong song zi written by 孔鲋 Kongfu (264BC - 208BC).

The book translates into: The Kong family Masters' Anthology. It's a collection of dialogs between Confucius and his disciples.

汉·孔鲋《孔丛子·记问》:“天子布德,将致太平,则麟先为之呈祥。”

The quote talks about the emperor bringing peace, good fortune, and long life.
