Went in to the local 5/3 bank today. A couple months ago they said they'd charge me a fee (I didn't have a checking account) Today I went in and asked if I could put coins in the coin counter. They said yes. After going up with my recipt they refused to pay me my full $1000 and instead would only give me $950. I showed them that I was a customer but they wouldn't budge, said I was doing a "Commercial Transaction" I told them I did not have a business... no go. So now I'm out 50 bucks. Don't be caught by this, make sure you ask if they are going to charge you fees each time you dump.

Did you talk with a manager???

Was there a dump fee if you deposited the amount of your dumps?

Talked with the manager and he told me "it's a commercial transaction" which I of course told him it wasn't ::sigh:: I asked if I could deposit it and he said sure $950 deposit.

I've left a message with the regional manager so far. Can't yet find phone numbers for further up the chain.

Does it say at or near the coin counter that a fee may be applicable, or give any warning?

If not, I don't see how they can keep your 50 bucks. Ask them how they define "commercial transaction". If it is automatically based on a certain dollar amount I would ask them where and how that info was communicated to you. Sometimes banks send out crap that nobody reads (like those privacy statement policy) mailings you get every so often. If they simply say it is a policy but it was never communicated to you, I don't see how you can be liable for the 50 bucks.

Just my humble opinion.

Thanks Clovis and Jim. There is an indication for 5% fee for non-customers, that's why I got a checking account. I'm one of those weird people that actually reads through contracts and didn't see anything about fees for commercial transactions at all, or even that a commercial transaction could exist on a personal account. I called my normal 5/3'rd banker, great guy. He's going to call around for me and find out what is up with this. I need to make sure and call his regional manager (apparently different region) and make sure to give him props.

Going back by the bank on my way home to get them to sign something saying they charge 5% fees to me when I bring in coin, doubt they'll sign it though. I was flustered so I don't even think I have the receipt now. I can live with losing 50 bucks, won't put me out of house and home, just feel very disrespected.

If it was me and they did not have it at the counter I would have told them to take my $1000 back out of the conter and I will take it back home with me. I would be dam if I will give my bank $50 for cashing in my change. If and when the banks around here start charging a fee I guess I will be done CRH......Matt

I dump there all the time. As long as you have an active checking account (used regularly) they don't charge the fee. Stay on them!

Wow...that is one tough pill to swallow.

I'd fight it if it were just $5. But $50??? And without warning???

I would have demanded that they return my coins as well. They must disclose those fees in advance. Offering a service free to customers means that it is free, not just free unless they decide otherwise after the fact.

Yeah if I'd thought about it more I would have demanded my coins back. I did so later when I went back to get a copy of the policy and a receipt (neither of which they would give me) and they said they couldn't because the transaction was already done.
