5000/d coinmaster tips??

Howdy all! Just picked up a 5000/d and was hoping anyone who had used this unit could give me tips on using it. I have printed the White's manual on it, but only a user knows how to finetune it, etc.

I used a 5000/D for 30 yrs and found a lot of stuff with it. You will learn that the coins and bottle caps make a different tone. The coins are a very sharp tone and the bottle caps make a hollow type sound. Also the more you descriminate the less depth you get. The only way to learn the machine is to use it. Throw some coins and trash on the ground and practice listening to the different tones.

I had a few of these - they're still great old units. Most important is properly ground balancing it and hunting with an ever-so-slight threshold tone (GEB Disc mode). I usually ran the disc at 7-7.5 to just cause stinkin' zinc's to break up. I never found nickels or gold but it sure finds the coins - silver and clad. Pinpointing was always nice and spot on with them. Swing slightly away from the target - pull the pinpoint trigger as you're sweeping back towards the target to 'detune' it and get a spot-on pinpoint. I liked the way these old analogs sounded too. The more you use it, the more it'll 'talk to you' on good vs. bad targets.

I found a Confederate Archer bolt (solid cannon projectile) intact with its sabot at a depth of approximately 18 inches. I almost couldn't reach it in the hole I dug. Properly tuned and carefully listened to, the machine is a deep seeking classic! All I heard at first was a slight increase in tone; then the tone got stronger as I dug deeper and put the coil down the hole. Talk about exciting! That was my first significant find with any metal detector-in the 1970s. It isn't the easiest to tune, but if you can learn to tune it and listen to it, it's spot-on. I still have mine.

I still have my 5000 D series 2 coin master for 27 years, allthough I have not seen the looks of the series 1 I have my set up formula on mine that has worked and continues to produce me blessings. If you can set up yours in and allmost similar way you probably can get off to a good start.
Set up: tuner until you hear the humming tone disapear about 1 o'clock on the dial. volume max, mode tr disk(this little rascal continues to produce me) GEB 5 on dial, disc. 5½ or 7 I hope with this set up you can more or less adapt yours let me know how it turns out. Ralph C.
