540 number question

What kind of numbers are you reading when you get a very small ring that looks like very thin woven wire. I was digging today and I dug up a very small and crusty ring with a 12, 13. I have been told that was gold numbers for rings but it is also nickel numbers. I don't have any way of cleaning it to find out more. Any ideas would be welcome.
