With the spot gold price hovering around $1,000 an once, the popularity of weekend gold nugget detecting is increasing. Keep in mind, just purchasing any Big 5 metal detector does not guarantee your success. There is a tremendous difference from a basic metal detector and a White’s TDI or Minelab 4500. The Minelab costs around $4,500! Sound expensive? You bet! But, here is a 5.36 oz Nevada gold nugget found recently with a Minelab metal detector.

As most gold is mined as fine gold dust, like diamonds, the nuggets are worth a premium over the spot price, and the larger the nugget, usually the higher the premium. Most nuggets found are usually a gram or less. However, if you have the right equipment, know how to use the detector and are in the right area at the right time, you could be as lucky as the fellow who found a 32.2 oz Alaskan gold nugget http://www.california-gold-rush-miner.us/california-gold-rush-miner/?p=384.

If you think of it as your hobby and get out to the right areas, those nuggets can really add up. The photo above is 75 ounces of gold nuggets accumulated over three to four years by a retired Arizona resident with a Minelab gold metal detector. These nuggets were found in AZ, Mexico, CA , Montana and Nevada.

Yes, gold detecting is a hobby that can make you serious money. To see a photo of the 75 oz of nuggets, visit: http://www.california-gold-rush-miner.us/california-gold-rush-miner/?p=490

That's really cool, but, truthfully - any gold I got (in those amounts) would NEVER make the papers. (even the neighbors and the family probably wouldn't know).

That sure would be nice to find even 1 oz of nuggets....Matt

Those nuggets brought back alot of memories. When I was a child ( around 8 years old, about 1955 ) growing up in Brownsville, TX my uncle had some friends that would visit him from time to time from Mexico. One visit in particular was forever etched in my mind. They would sit, drink coffee and talk about prospecting in the Mountains in Mexico. One of the gentleman pulled out this little pouch and poured all the nuggets into his hand to show my uncle, I got to touch the gold nuggets which was the first time in my life I had ever done that. That picture you posted reminded me of that moment, I have oftened wondered where these mountains were and if these gentlemen are still alive, my uncle passed 2 years ago at the age of 89. Thanks for the memories. HH John Angleton, TX

That was one beautiful sight to see

You got that right any thing i find worth while no one knows it is best to keep that to your self. But a lot have a big ego and have to tell about every thing they find............. I always said keep you mouth shut..... MY MOTO IS RIGHT BELOW HERE IN MY SIGNATURE AND HAS BEEN THERE............*********** .LET NO ONE KNOW WHAT WERE OR WHEN

Posting finds has nothing to do with ego for most of us. I post finds, but do not say where they were found, or any description other then general.

Now with that said, 75 ozs of gold,........... I'm not sure that even my wife would know.... ;D

You have to have your detector over the right spot in order to find a gold nugget regardless of the detector you have. I hunted with a Whites VSAT for 15 years in NV, AZ, and OR. I never found anything but bullets, shot, and once a tobaco can. I sold it last year and bought a MXT. The first week in NV this year, I found 4 nuggets. One was 3/4 ounze, 2 were the size of my little fingernail, and one was less than a grain. Was the MXT better? I doubt it. In the case of the 2 fingernail size nuggets, I was competing with a fellow using a Minelab 4000. He found one nugget and I found 2. I just happened to be over the two nuggets and he was only over one. When I got back to MI, the first week that I detected my local beach, I found a 1/4k solitaire ring with a 14k gold band. I just happened to be over it too instead of the more than 2,000 pulltabs that I later picked up on the same beach. Sometimes, luck can be better than a $5K detector or experience.

If you don't get your coil over it you don't have a chance of finding it, luck is always at least 50% of it..............
