Dug this spike last time out and it came out nicely from its bath. To many, its just an old nail but it is actually a very historic piece locally. I dig lots of nails and always anticipate locating a hand forged example like this one.this spike is associated with an 1840s schooner that was constructed by the local blacksmith and shipwright at the old spot I am poking round in....gotta love the forged stuff.

It takes a lot of holes to find a good one, I don't like digging junk iron but after so many bad targets there will be good ones waiting. Here is a look at the many square nails that I have dug lately that are not restorable.20181231_123547.webp

Very nice how long did you have to treat it for?

That's a beautiful piece my friend and congrats!

Gotta love that head. It's just a larger cousin to the small ones often found.

I have found smaller and larger examples at this site....as well as some bronze and brass.

Nice find & restoration, congratulations

That really came out nice.
