It almost looks like a cap that screws off - like a tube of toothpaste.![]()
I'm pretty sure this is the top portion from a candlestick holder.
They were removable so they could be cleaned of the wax drippings

That would make sense considering there is only gilding on the inside. What about the symbol though? That would be on the inside of the candlestick.
It's simply a makers mark, the Victorians (British & American) were very proud of what they produced.
Placing the mark on the inside is actually a good spot to put it, because you'd see it every time you washed it out.

The logo on it is Colgate and Co. it's the top of some sort of tin or tube. The octagonal piece is the actual cap and would be the part that threads off. Early 1900's is my guess
