After digging a quarter and 17 pennies and twice as many junk items out of a nearby park, I decided to hit a beach I have never visited. Besides a 1982 nickel (my payment for all the nails and other jagged pieces of iron I pulled out of the sand), was this Austin Cartridge Company 12 Ga Crackshot headstamp, ~1895-1907, which is the most interesting find of the day and now my oldest headstamp found.

Well over a hundred yrs old, nicely done.

I’ve started saving the headstamps I find. Haven’t really looked them over yet. I’ve got about 1/2 a five gallon bucket’s worth. Unfortunately, I’ve thrown at least that many into recycling before I started saving them. I fondly remember the days of paper shotgun shells.

Thanks for the post.

Thats a neat one for sure and one I don't have. I save mine as well. Been meaning to make a display for them. What beach in Wisconsin if I may ask? There were lots of trap shooting areas on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Great find and congratulations on your oldest! I save all of my older shotshell headstamps as well.
