A couple of "eyeball" finds...UPDATE: THE FIRST MASON JAR???

UPDATED April 14th 2010...See REPLIES

Well, it has been a bit painful reading all these amazing posts (many from my region) while my DFX is out for repairs. The bright side is that it has given me time to scout out some new sites, which is what I did this morning.

I checked out a wooded area that was rumored to be a resort for wealthy Philadephians during the 18th and 19th century. I scoped out some hillsides be an old path in the woods and found a nice large patch of English Ivy, which is always a good indication of a former homestead in my area. There in the ivy was a lot of broken glass & pottery. I pulled out a few pieces and found this nice shard with the date 1858, and another dated 1897. These are the first dated bottles I have found.

I also spotted the small piece of metal that looks like it may have been part of an old medal or something. Any guesses?

Needless to say I will be running back there as soon as my detector is back...in the mean time can someone give advice to a novice bottle digger???

The ruler is an advertising ruler. The 16 is actually the half inch mark, making the item slightly larger than an inch.

Re: A couple of "eyeball" finds

Nice finds, Neil. Hope you can get into that jungle and find some good coppers ::)

Re: A couple of "eyeball" finds

WOW Neil!!! Sounds like a winner of a spot you have there :headbang: If the clues that the site has provided you already are correct, I'd say you're gonna be hard pressed to find anything newer than late 1800's in that area :hello2: :hello2: :hello2:

P.S. - Can I "buy in" for a share of hunting that baby out with you? :notworthy: :notworthy:

Anytime you want to take a drive down, you are more than welcome! I recently found a 19th century painting depicting the site!

Re: A couple of "eyeball" finds...UPDATE:"CROWLEYTOWN" MASON JAR!

UPDATE APRIL 14TH 2010: I was doing some research tonight about old towns in NJ and came across an article about the first mason jar being manufactured in Burlington Co NJ in 1858. Along with that was the attached picture showing an intact example of the bottle I found last year. I dug up this post from the archives.>Selling price for an intact specimen.....$600 and up!!! :hello2: :hello2: :hello2:

NEIL, in the redbook friut jar #9 this jar is listed at 500-750.00 it has to be exactly like this...ground lip, unmarked zinc screw cap wide mouth 3" but it probly has gone up in price since this book was published they just released # 10 last year or beginning of this year.... on a footnote you can not always go by the patent dates on any fruit jar they was reprod.. but I could tell your was orginal by the wittling of the jar... the really old jars will be grounded on the top lips so when you remove the lid it will be rough from being grounded..
