Metal Detecting
Last night, before I went home from work, I swung by a park I'd not detected before and hit the tot-lot and surrounding trees. I thought it was pretty much just a "regular" coin change hunt, with some junk jewelry thrown in. Today I took the "junk jewelry" and cleaned it up, and on the back I found ".925 12K" After blinking a couple of times and grabbing a magnifying glass, I confirmed it. Booyah! 5th gold for the year, and first gold/silver combo. The cross is exactly the same one you'll find if you type in "Beautiful! Sterling Silver Antiqued Cross with 12K Leaves Pendant" on Amazon for $129.

This one is going to hit the auction site, I think!

Then, feeling inspired, I went out and hit another park (in an area my son had previously covered... I do this regularly, because he misses stuff... I wasn't disappointed!)

I found the class ring about 2" down. Unlike the other ancient class ring I've found, this one is from 2010, and had a full name inscribed on the inside band. EXCELLENT! I was able to find the guy and contact him through Facebook. Waiting for a reply back. It'll be my first return (in spite of trying with every valuable ring I've found!). Pretty stoked!

I love this hobby... Not every trip produces more than clad, but enough of them do, it keeps me thoroughly hooked!

Congrats on the sweet finds. I bet your son was less than pleased to see that he missed a class ring. Ouch...

Nice! Super finds!

Doesn't pay to hurry, not when your detecting.

Actually, that depends on the type of detector you have, the composition of the ground, and if you're after deep or shallow targets. Swinging fast with a fast processor detector on dry sand looking for shallow, freshly dropped targets can work out very well. You can cover lots of ground that way.

Oh, i'm not THAT kind of Dad. I don't tell him if there's something he's missed (unless I'm RIGHT behind him). He's 12 years old, and I want him passionate about going and hanging out with me. Making him feel badly because he's "doing it wrong" isn't my idea of being supportive! Since he's more of a hummingbird while detecting, rather than a grid follower, I don't bother trying to correct. He has fun finds too, just misses stuff in a grid.

I simply told him, I found it at the same park, and left it at that. He thought it was very cool, too!

Totally true, but wandering at mach Ten with large gaps in the swing, because you want to "Cover that ground before Dad gets to it" doesn't usually work out. LOL

My poor kid is constantly comparing my speed to his, and no matter how many times I tell him "I'm faster because my coil is 2" longer and every swing I can cover more ground!" doesn't result in him slowing down. After he had a particularly rough hunt, where I constantly told him "slow down son!" he finally put the detector down, and said, "I'll just watch you." I'd clearly just vacuumed the fun out of it... I'd realized my mistake was real when for the next 3 hunts he declined to go. I determined not to do that to him again. It's about the fun, not the finds at that age... So now, I just congratulate him on finds, and go back another day to cover the ground again. :) As a result, he comes pretty much every time, and totally has a ball. I love it. :)

Yer building memories....that's worth a whole lot more than you will ever find in the ground!! When our grandson was younger, we used to take him point huntin' with us every now and then. The wife and me would take a few along with us to "salt" for him. It was worth the expression when he found them...just a thought.

I've actually considered salting, but in the end, he's old enough that if he found out, it would make things worse. Besides that, there's PLENTY he finds without me needing to salt! There are many trips he out coins me. I've just been the lucky one to find the jewelry, I think. He loves the tot-lots and sanded pits, I typically search the edges on a second trip. Most jewelry, though just seems to be out in the middle of nowhere, which is why I grid. It's slower, but very thorough. I find a lot of weird stuff that way in the sports parks, too. My favorites are the silverware knives shoved straight down into the dirt. You know some Mom brought it for sandwiches at the game, and some kid shoved it straight down, and then it "disappeared" in the grass... no amount of looking will find that sucker once it's below the thatch. I've found two of them in the last couple of months, and I just laugh when they come up. You know some Mom was TICKED. LOL

Well.. that was a sidebar, wasn't it!

Nice finds! & I have always wanted to return a find, but they're usually unmarked.
