From the old gold rush fields around Sacramento. Here we have some Chinese coins, an old lock plate, a nice old union metallic cartridge company shotgun shell in very nice shape, a miner's belt buckle which was five inches down and gave a nice soft signal, and a beautiful brass tag that used to be on an iron cannisters of lard. It says, "ES Baker. Finest lard. New York. Definitely brought to the gold fields by miners who came overland from back east. Old harmonica reed too! Enjoy!

Those are sweet finds. Congrats!

Nice finds from the gold fields. I wonder about the Chinese coins. I've dug two here in northern Illinois. Were they still considered money once the Chinese brought them here or perhaps just among the Chinese themselves?

This is a question I've wondered about too. There were Chinese stores in Coloma at the California gold discovery site. I'm sure Chinese money was used there. I have never found any US coins where I have found Chinese coins. So, maybe the Chinese used them among themselves.
