A few mystery items & annual fishing derby

Nothing too exciting here. Just a few things I found during last week that I could use help IDing.

I held my 3rd annual kids fishing derby yesterday, so there was no detecting for me.
Here is the link to that event for those who would like to see:
http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,158462.0.html

As far as the measly finds, can anyone tell me what the item with the "S" on it may be?It looks old and I found it at the 1830's CW house.

I also found another Hope diamond. ::)
Is this quartz or glass? I found it out in the middle of the same field, and it just looked out of place there.
I thought it looked too clear to be quartz, but it looked too rough to be glass.

Found a lantern piece, broken buckle, silver plated fork, etc.

That's all. I'll try harder this week. ;D
Have a good week,
MM

The "S" thing is a latch from an old "Sellers" hoosier cabinet.
This web site has copies of ads for these old cabinets. Scroll down to "Sellers"....

DiggerBug,
A dead on match!!! Great job on the ID.
Thanks,

Congrats to diggerbug on the ID of that one.

Your stone is a piece of quartz crystal which has been weathered. I am unsure as to the glacial action in your neck of the woods in times past, but they can always be weathered from the parent material by something else such as frost and thaw alone, rolled in streams, and redeposited in a secondary context. Keep in mind that it is likely tens of millions of years old, and with tens of millions of years of history.
Quartz crystals will exhibit cleavage in one direction. The rust spots you see could be just that.... intrusive iron into these cleavage planes. The crystals will show internal fractures along these cleavage planes from the mechanics involved in the weathering.
If you hold it up to a light, and see little rainbow areas in the interior, this is why. You will also notice that it exhibits imperfect conchoidal fracture. This is not a usual gem characteristic I believe.
Nice finds.

Plebah,
Thanks for the ID and great info. Much appreciated. I was getting ready to have it mounted on a ring for the wife. ;D
Thank you,
MM

Doug,
You better get your hunting in now. It's been cold up north here so you guys must be enjoying some milder temps.... Been kinda busy but a post is due.

Saw the fishing derby. First class operation you run. Very nice.

Thanks Bob.
I'd love to have the cold weather again, so I could get back out into the woods. ;D

Re: A few mystery items & annual fishing derby

Years ago, I went detecting in Morrisville at a park that was near a creek, as I remember. There was a plowed field on the back side of the field. As I was detecting, I found a rough quartz crystal. I was really suprised to find something like that. It was about the size of a 50 cent piece. So, perhaps that is a piece of quartz you found. Great finds, I always look forward to seeing your posts from Cary and Morrisville since that area was my hunting grounds back in the 90's when I worked for Cary FD and live in N. Raleigh, and later in Garner off Ten Ten Rd. I have gotten married since then and have 4 young boys, so I don't get out detecting very often. Well, take care, Bryan in Wilson (actually, Goldsboro at work where I am writing this).
