Ok I'm still here people, i cant get enough of the info from this site and the legends for PA....

I'm' looking thru the classifieds here on Tnet, but it looks like you get more for your money thru KellyCo, and yes it also depends on what you are looking for.

I'm looking for a starter MD, since i have never before used one in my life, i see alot of good things about the ACE250 for beginners but I'm actually looking at the Fisher F2, and it comes with all those free goodies from Kellyco

So would that F2 be a good one to start with, my main goal is for coins, and some relics? (ill be starting in my backyard for testing and to get some experience)

Has anyone tried to MD the York Fair Grounds? Is it even allowed there?

What about MD'ing Gifford pinchot park, John Rudy park, Rocky ridge, the Rail Trail, Lake Redman, has anyone tried to MD these spots?

I'm also thinking about prospecting some of the old Mills if its allowed, Flour and grist mills were used during the CW times i read some where ... Has anyone tried to MD these spots?

OK that's it for now unless i think of some more questions, thanks for reading all...

Silver, welcome to Tnet.

Both the 250 and F2 are great detectors from what I have read on here. Copenhaver sells Garretts while Gettysburg electronics sells both Garretts and Fishers. Check with them first. While they probably can't compete with Kellyco, they can give you valuable "face time" and show you the ins and outs of the machine you choose. Kellyco does have some great deals, the free stuff can quite often be junque. You might want to consider asking them to exchange the junque for an extra coil, pinpointer or a nice set of head phones.

Don't know about detecting the York Fair Grounds. Only way to know for sure is to call and ask.

PA State Parks require permission from the office. About the only thing you are able to use is a screw driver to pop the targets out. No plug cutting. No digging tools.

The old mills would be great places. Get permission from the owners first.

Once you do get your machine, read the owners manual and do it again and again. Practice in your yard using a grid pattern. After cutting a plug and replacing it you should barely be able to see it.

Everything eathabs said! I have an ACE 250 so I can only speak for it. I love it and am very happy with it!! Make sure you get permission that's the big thing!! You are not to far from me I think maybe we can meet in the middle sometime!! Good luck!!

I do not live in that area of PA, so yes you can detect all those areas you mentioned. Good Luck!!

I'm in Leesport now. Grew up in Reading, went to Central.

Rail Trail is off limits, York Fair Grounds is off limits. I don't think Pinchot allows hunting anymore on the beach but I don't know about other areas. York City allows detecting in all the parks there but becareful of the neighborhoods. Very old parks there but I just no enough time in the day for me. Did you know that the original site of the York County fair is the intersection of King and Queen Streets. I went there and it is all paved over >:(

The York County Parks office is right around the corner from me on Emig Road by John Rudy Park.
All they they will do is have you sign a document and let you know where you can and cannot hunt in the parks.
John Rudy is okay but, Ballfields are off limits.
You cannot hunt around the York County Parks office which drives you crazy because it is an 1800's farm house with a huge amount of potential.

As far as the detector, why don't you take a trip over to Gettysburg Electronics. He has Whites, Garret, and Fisher's on the floor and I hear he is very thorough in explaining the difference. Most important you can touch them, ask questions, and know what you are getting.

Good Luck,

Let me know how you make out and maybe I can meet up.

I found my T2 in Cabela's Bargain Cave.

Thank you for the very informative information, its appreciated and i figured someone has already went down this road for detecting sites and such in the area.

Have you found anything of interest in the neighboring parks at all?

Ive heard of that Teknetics brand but i didnt know how good it is for a new comer like myself, how has your T2 been for you?

I just picked up one of those pinpointers from harbor frieght im about to MD my yard with it until i get a real MD lol.

happy hunting all....

I really like my T2 but sometimes I go to an area and the interference hinders it, most of the time it works great, I still feel like I am learning what it is telling me. I use my Whites 6000 Series 2 when I come into too much interference.

I have been hitting local parks and have found 1 mercury dime, two buffalo nickels, a barber dime, a walking half dollar, some silver jewelry, a diamond earring for a girl who lost it on the volleyball court, and a mess of clad. I love this hobby but wish I had more time to do it!!! It is very addicting.

I would start out in local parks at the tot lots, search the wood chips. Go early in the morning if you can. Digging is very easy. You will get to know you detector quickly there. You WILL find some coins and maybe some jewelery by the swing sets (this is where I have found all mine, pretty sure it is where the mom is pushing the child and the jewelry catches on the clothes and breaks away).

I haven't tried that pinpointer but I have one and wouldn't detect without one.

Always, always cover your holes and leave the area better than when you first got there.

Good Luck!

GroundHog thanks for the info that saves from asking for some of those places, any reason that you cant search the beaches at pinchot?
Maybe in the off season perhaps or is no hunting at all there?
Have you had any luck at any of the public parks in the area?

Just bought a ACE 250, found it thru the classifieds here, it has a chip coil but it is said to still work perfectly for $130.00 i couldnt pass it up ya know. So im waiting for that in the mail hopefully it will come today :)
