Hello,
My son has always been a Civil was buff and is a history major. He has always wanted a detector and I would like to get him one this Christmas. He knows there are many restrictions in hunting relics but has a strong desire to get involved and would enjoy finding coins too. I was looking at entry level detectors like the ace 250, Whites Prizm II and Tesora silverumax. He takes great care of his belongings so I would buy a better model to get one that may be more productive for relic hunting and/or keep pace with a growing hobby. Your imput as relic hunters would be a great help to me as I only can read about these units and guess. Thanks for your time, Cally

for the price i would go with the ace250 , i heard thier good units

but the ace 250 is not a relic machine ;) the cibola is supposed to be decent, also iv heard the prizms are good but i dont know if they are for relics..

What's in a name? Just because someone says it's something doesn't mean it's true. The Nautilus is considered a hard core relic machine; does this mean you can't use it for coin hunting? I don't tink soo. There are people who successfully use it for coinhunting. The Fisher CZ6a is considered to be a great coin & jewellry hunter & telling some people that you'd like to prospect with it would elicit great guffaws of laughter. You know what? I took one up to Alaska my first time prospecting & pulled out about $7000 in gold with it. Guess who was doing the laughing there. The thing to do is see what features are required/desired for what you plan to do and buy a detector that satisfies those criteria. What you'll find, on many a forum, are people who are brand loyal almost to the point of psychosis. I don't know what the forum policy is regardig other forums, but if you'll send a private message I can give you the name of one where you'll get some well thought out answers. ...Willy.

For relic hunting try the Tesoro Tejon or the Whites MXT or a Fisher 1270. All very good relic machines.

I can't speak for or against the other detectors for I;ve never used them, but the White's Pirzm's are fantastic detectors. I have a Prizm III and have found all kinds of relics and coins with it and am VERY happy with it overall. It is easy to use and does the job, a friend has the Prizm II, it is less expensive than the III but just as good of a detector. I've never used a ACE or ACER but have seen alot of posts here of great finds by people using it so know that is capable as well.

AllanW is right. Those machines will cover most ground and conditions for relics. They are tuned just right. The problem is you need them all for certain situations, which is why I have five machines.

...Any detector can be used for finding relics....just use the all metal mode or place the discrimination knob on zero.

.......All of the detector models mentioned in this thread are still used today....anyway since I have been in this hobby for over 45 years I see nothing wrong over bringing up old posts......I even like reading all of the Karl Von Mueller aka Dean Miller books and all of the H. Glenn Carson books which some may say are antiqued!!

I wasn't trying to be rude. I was just pointing out that this post is very old. Some people don't look at those things.
