OK, this has been bouncing around in my head for a while now...:icon_scratch:
We all know when hunting a ocean beach to look for the 'low' areas for the best results.I'm thinking a good/cheap/easy tool to employ is a 'soil probing rod',
Probing the low areas of the beach will tell you quick & easy.Just how deep the sand is,to hard packed clay, gravel, rocks,or bedrock....Mainly to be used in conjunction while -sand sifting-. The way I see it,"heavies" are just that..Heavy.No difference if its a beach sand or a gold-pan or sluice. They all find their way deeper.Until they find something too hard to continue...
What ya think ?

Good idea but I'm a land guy and already carry plenty to deal with.

Thanks rook.Happy hunting :)

I try to read the beaches looking for lots of rocks or shells popping out that are already resting on the hard pan

Don't need it. Anyone can learn to read a beach in just a few minutes. It's not rocket science. Less to carry equals more time swinging.:skullflag:

Sounds like a good idea. Test it and post results. Might get more interest. If searching an new area, it would be a way of learning the topography.

Wow post 6 & 7 .YOU need to read my OP.

I read it. A probe is a waste of time - in my Never humble opinion. If it works for you, winner-winner-chicken-dinner!:skullflag:

Your MD only goes down so deep.....and detects metal. I have used a probe hunting Indian artifacts before to find the pan. But I don't know why you would want to waste your time with this idea of probing,
for what?

Its to be used while Sand Sifting, not metal detecting.Digging 2 ft of sand to hard pan is better than digging 4,5,6 ft down

Regarding ground probes in general:

Bottle diggers use these probes to locate bottle dumps etc. I notice that the one displayed has no type of enlarged point. I'm told that an enlarged point makes the hole slightly larger in diameter than the shaft so pulling the probe back out is not as much work. Something to consider when buying a probe. Also unless you have a real healthy back I would go to a 5' versus a 4' to reduce the amount bending over when pushing the rod down.
