A handle to something...

Found at the base of the largest maple tree I've ever seen, 8" deep. Lots of square nails around, a horseshoe. I've never seen a canning jar lid lock this large, but maybe? Your help is appreciated. I'm working to get an idea of the farmstead. I'm sure someone here has an idea. And don't say Jiffy-Pop handle.
