A Hit 'N Miss Day...

It's been months since I went out detecting, always had some excuse or another to do other things.

Amyhow... I saw the light today, and headed out onto the old common with hopes held high.

Not a great deal to show everyone on this outing, but thought I'd share it anyhow.

Now, excuse my ignorance... but what is the white thingy to the left of the Pepsi top? ??? ??? ??? Some sort of bullet? ??? ??? ??? Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

The horseshoe? Well, I'm not really superstitious, but I did buy a lottery ticket on my way back home!!! ;D

Re: A Hit 'N Miss Day...

Cool finds

Love horse shoes.

I do believe it's a smashed bullet.

Re: A Hit 'N Miss Day...

circa 1860s '3 ring' Lee Enfield muzzell loading 58cal (.577) bullet (also used in the first breach loading Snider). Same type used in the American Civil War.

Re: A Hit 'N Miss Day...

Just noticed, the 'smooth' .577 is a Pritchett bullet, used in the the same rifles.

Thanks for that Crusader... According to my 1900 O/S map of the area, there was a target range in the area I found it.

Yours is likely to be an early militia range from the late 1860s.

Your proberly find a lot more, I found one as well. Got over 600 bullets behind the range which used the hill as a back stop.

Re: A Hit 'N Miss Day...

That's exactly the same scenario I found this one... wedged into a hillock which is situated behind the site where the target range was.
Modern shoe-box houses on there now, unfortunately.

They chose the spots quite carefully, although most of the bullets in our area went over one railway track & onto the main line, with a road & house in range behind the butts. :tard:

That's a 'Petplan' dog ID tag... Found a few of those, but fortunately never dug up a dog yet! ;D
