A hybrid axe? and a few others from my last couple of hunts...

I hit a couple of new spots recently.

I found this axe today... I am hoping someone can give me some information about it (ahem, Romeo, IP).

I also came across this toasted button. The back reads... Orange, and Gilt?

This one here, looks like it had some love put into it. It's a cool keyhole.

This final one baffles me. It looks like a tiny copper, and the only letters I can make out of it are "RRI".

Carpenters hatchet. Pretty cool find. I still use one on rough framing occasionally.

The "axe" is in fact more commonly referred to as a Shingle Hatchet or Shingler. These will easily date to the mid-19th Century, or a bit earlier. We also see this style in use well into the 20th Century, with only slight changes. I have personally dug many of these Shingle Hatchets on sites across the country, dating from the 1840's, up through the 1870's.

I've seen similar ones in houses in and around the French Quarter here, I think there's a pretty wide time frame it could be from, but I would hazard a guess of say..... 1880's to 1920's..... and I could be off years in either direction.

That is a shingle hatchet.
The square break is where the nail puller slot was. It snapped the blade so the hatchet was put up and forgotten and lost. If kids find it than its really lost.
