A KEY AND A SEMI-KEY, breaking some records!

I went out with a buddy tonight, back to the old faithful spot, and not finding much. This spot is very close to the train tracks, and then a loud clanging, rattling, and annoying train rolled in. I cranked my Deus headphones up to 9 to hear over the train, and a few steps later there it was-a whisper of a signal. Cut the plug, dug down, down, down to find some bits of rusty iron. At the bottom of the hole, a full pinpointer deep, I found this 1867 IH cent.

My buddy came over as I squinted and said "there's no way that says 1867, could it be?!". He looked at it and confirmed that I'm not crazy. Holy crap!

Finding anything reaching back into the 1890's is difficult in SASKATCHEWAN, but the 1860's?! And a semi-key date as well. I'm new to the world of cleaning coppers with peroxide, would the experts here recommend doing that with this coin? Or leave as is?

It's by far my oldest IH cent ever, my first semi key IH cent, and I've now found more IH cents in one season than ever before, and there's still at least three months before snow flies.

Last night I found the old Canadian Pacific Railway switch key at a different spot, and I was thrilled with it. Never found one before.

That IHP looks to be in great shape, if it were mine I'd soak in mineral oil and lightly tooth pick away the remaining crust. Personally have not been happy with the peroxide technique...leaves the copper dark and dry.

Thanks Jon. I certainly don't want to damage it, so the gentler mineral oil method sounds good.

Congratulations on the IH, I will never use peroxide on a coin again. Turns them black and you lose as much detail as you gain. Brings out blemishes that were not noticeable before.

Very nice IH coin! I would agree with the others, use mineral oil on old copper coins!

Congrats JC. I am with VMI... peroxide is a last rest resort, it makes the coins darken, that coin looks good, smooth and green. Take a toothpick to it.
