Hi gang, how's everyone today(tonight..depending on your time reading this)? I'm doing great! I didn't have time for an extensive hunt today but I managed to squeeze in a short one at a High School Football Field. A hunt that would prove fruitful despite its brevity.
After having a relaxing Sunday morning breakfast/newspaper read with my wife, we hopped into the car and drove to the jewelry store to see her anniversary ring. Our tenth anniversary is coming up next month and I am giving her an anniversary band to wear with her wedding band and engagement ring. The ring had to be made as what she wanted didn't exist. It's a channel set band with 10 diamonds (small ones) representing each year we've been married. We went to see it today because it just got to the dealer from the maker. I know my lovely wife wanted to just wear it out of the store and bring it on home with her, but she's not allowed to have it yet. It *IS* an anniversary gift, even if she got to try it on to make sure the size was right. <smile> I know I know I know.. tease! That and I've got one more payment to make on it for it to be paid off. Whew! I wish I could find something along those lines with my detector! To be SURE!.
Anyway, after viewing and sizing the ring, we did the grocery shopping and returned home before my wife had to leave for her support group session. She runs a support group for "consumers" (persons with Mental illnesses) for her not for profit organization on Sundays. That left me free to sneak in a quick hunt. <smile>
I remembered seeing a sign on my way to Louisville (another city here in Kentucky.. you might have heard of a little race they have there every year for horses.. the Kentucky Derby??) Anyway.. on my way there I passed through the berg of Versailles KY. and saw a sign that read "Soccer Complex". <raised eyebrown> At first it didn't' dawn on me when I saw it.. I was thinking more along the lines of "complex"? I've heard of sports injuries, even suffered a few before but I've never heard of anyone developing a COMPLEX over their sport. <laughing>
Ok.. enough kidding. This complex, as I drove through it today, was HUGE! Something to the order of 16 or so game fields (pitches?). There's One BIG concession stand..er..building in the middle with restrooms and dining areas (covered no less). There are a couple of other smaller sheds being used as concession stands as well. But what got me were the number of people there today. There were well over a thousand people at the "complex" when I drove through.. SUV's, MiniVans, Station wagons, truck and cars.. and RV's . What's more, since there is never enough seating for these venues most of those people packed in their own seating.. folding camp chairs! I LOVE Camp chairs.. they are so pocket dump friendly! <grin> And as I looked out along the sidelines of the numerous games at the hundreds and hundreds of camp chairs strung out along the edges of the fields, I do believe my mouth began to water! My detector arm began to twitch, and I could almost feel the grass beneath my knee pads as I was collecting wayward change already. *sigh* Alas, I will have to wait on that activity for a few days. Today was too crowded and I've got to work for a living. So, I tucked that little hunting ground in the back of my mind for another day and headed off to a nearby baseball park instead. On my way there I happened by the County Highschool. The gates to the football field were open and calling my name. So I answered.
I geared up and begans sweeping the edges of the sidewalk from the parking area to the bleachers. A penny here, a penny there.. occasionally a quarter. Of course there were pull tabs, bottle caps and can confetti , and wadded up tin foil (or is it aluminum foil?) Trashy to say the least.. all neatly under the grass. I went slow and managed to pull out $2.68 in clad. Nothing old, nothing exciting.. but it was battery money.. or gas money, whichever. On my way back to my truck, I'm still swinging my detector of course, I hit a signal for a quarter. Hey.. I'll stop and dig up a quarter. As I tried to zero in on it though, the signal got all squirrelly on me, jumping from penny to quarter and all up and down the scale. My depth reading stayed fairly constant though, right at 4 inches. After I narrowed down my target signals I dug a nice big plug. And nothing was there. *sigh* I scanned the hole and the plug with my detector and it showed the target was still in the hole.. 4 inches deep. I ran my bullseye around the hole and got a buzz on one side (wall). I took my probe/knife and poked carefully around that signal site and found a metallic object.. I pried it loose from the soil and had to sit back on my heels and take a deep breath. This is what I saw.
YEAH! I was cheesin' from one ear to the other!
I do believe it's silver! And with some sort of inset(s) On closer examination after I cleaned it up a bit I was proved correct in my beliefs. It IS silver.. Sterling silver.. says so right on the inside of the band. <grin>
Well with that I was done.. or so I thought. On my way back to the truck I spied a bag beside the bleachers. I backpack. Now there's nobody else around and it doesn't look as if anyone has been there in days. I picked it up looking for a name on it and it had none, but there was something in it. It was a Swiss Gear bag.. not exactly cheap to start with. Anyway, I was distracted by my ring find and just tossed the bag in the back of my truck. When I got home and came down from the excitement of finding the ring and putting away my finds for the day, I pulled the bag back out and went through it. I found business cards in one of the pockets with a number on them. And various sign up sheets for running classes and track and field events classes, along with tape (ankle wrap etc) some drag chutes (parachutes for runners' training) and stop watches. Ok.. so it wasn't some kid who carelessly left his bag behind. I got the number off the card and called it. It was a track and field coach and he was delighted that someone had found his bag and more so that anyone bothered to look him up. He lives in Versailles but had no problems jumping in the car and driving up to Lexington to pick it up. And so he did. Ahhh.. feels good. BOTH finding bling!, getting to hunt PERIOD! and to turn a good deed in the process
Well, that's just icing on the cake.
Here are the rest of today's finds, I just couldn't take a picture of the warm and fuzzy feeling I had on the inside though..sorry.<smiling>
