They would be a way to hold the bowl an not drop it is my guess. I've seen a lot of Caddo pottery with these lugs.I love the lugs, the contours, etched designs and all it's features. By the way it's made, it wouldn't slosh it's contents out so easily if it were holding liquid. I also love the circular saw blade motif in the etchings! Seriously, it looks like something in motion, spinning. A very desirable piece. BTW, did the lugs serve a purpose or are they ornamental.
