Hi All,
I've been a on again off again roll hunter for 30+ years (I am only 44), and have been enjoying reading the posts on this forum for about a week now. I have been a metal detectorist for 11 years and just happened to find this site while searching through the MD forum lists.
You all take your searched rolls back to the bank?? lol So that is why I used to be so broke when I was younger.
I can remember going and getting a roll or two of Ike's hoping to find a Morgan or Peace dollar, never had that kind of luck to find one though.
Back in the late 70's in one trip where I bought ten dollars in cents I did get three rolls of wheaties. I also still have the four rolls of new 1977 Lincolns that I got one time. I opened them 30 years ago just to put them in mylar tubes.
I used to primarily hunt nickel rolls and I would keep anything older then me. I did get an occasional Buffalo and even a Shield nickel one time if I am remembering correctly.
A couple of years ago I started to buy half rolls, or loose halves if no rolls were available. Nothing serious like the amounts you all go through here. I think in about twenty rolls of loose & rolled halves from banks I picked up five 40%'ers, so not a great amount of success, but still cheaper then lottery tickets. The searched halves would then go to the kids for allowance money.
Hmmm, now I am thinking - When my wife would like some of my paycheck to help her with her share of the bills, I think I will give her money in halves. Of course I will count and roll them up, no sense in having her throw them back at me. And if she complains I will go back to nickel hunting.
No recent luck in getting large dollars from local banks, but two summers ago I went to get gas and saw a bunch of Ikes in the till. The lady was very happy to get rid of them. Seven nearly BU.
Now you all got my blood going and I am going to have to go do some more searching.
Happy Hunting All,
Scott (Mid-Mich)
