2" is about the right size for a bridle rosette, it also looks pewter which is common for them to be made of. Just a guess though.

I dont know what that Maine State shield is but its cool! It looks like it had nails/screws top and bottom to fasten it to...........:icon_scratch:

Michigan made license plates for a couple of years with an aluminum state seal that was attached to the steel plate. I don't know if Maine made them this way, but might be something to look into.

I agree with Rick. This appears to be a bridle rosette, similar to a few that I have found...mine are all approx. 2" in diameter. Nice find!
