A TEST!!! Minelab PRO coil versus Excelerator's SEF 10x12 coil---

After using Minelab's new Pro coil on my SEs now for several hunts, I was really anxious to also try out Excelerator/KellyCo's new SEF coils. I ordered both the 10x12 and 12x15 with both arriving yesterday, via UPS along with 3 tall man lower rods. Having been sick all week, fighting a case of pneumonia I haven't felt much like metal detecting or anything else for that matter. Tuesday, high on fever I thought the circle in our front yard was on fire. Not one normally to hallucinate, I hightailed it to the Doc first thing Wednesday morning. Two big pills, and a package of five to be taken once a day has put me on the road to recovery. Anyway, I got up this morning determined to compare my Minelab PRO coil to the SEF 10x12 whether feeling good; feeling bad.

Below is a picture of flag markers. What I did was to metal detect a section first using SEone dressed in my Minelab PRO coil; flagging all good signals. Then, I grabbed my SEtwo, dressed with the SEF 10x12 coil and went over the entire area again. The SEF coil hit on all signals found by the PRO plus found two more. Both detectors, other than coils are setup/programmed identically. I then proceeded to another strip, swinging Excel's SEF coil, marking all good targets. I followed this trip up; swinging my Minelab Pro. Once again, Minelab's PRO coil hit on all targets found by Excel's SEF coil, finding two more in addition. So, both coils performed almost identically IMO. I do give the edge to Minelab's PRO coil as in my opinion it is a little more sensitive on small items. Plus, it's lighter, and a little better balanced. Here's my take for my last three hunts.

I agree ! excellent post , i have the stock slimline coil and have been wondering about the pro coil , if its better then the slimline ! also have found out that when my se nulls out like on a nail, if a coin is next to it i can not hear the coin just hear the se nulling , i dont know if the pro coil will help me there or if its my settings on the se :icon_scratch:

Way to go GRB, that's a great test & some nice finds! Those Minelabs sure do find the deep treasure!

Re: A TEST!!! Minelab PRO coil versus Excelerator's SEF 10x12 coil---

Thanks Guys!
The Pro coil is the best thing Minelab has done of late for us SE/Explorer owners!
It's really a joy to swing.

I did take time to try out Excelerator's new SEF 12x15 coil today as well. After swinging it for no less than two hours I can honestly say relic hunters will absolutely love this coil! It's extremely heavy however; heavier than my Excel 18 inch round.
But, is built like a tank. I'll write more about the 12x15 later.

Have a pleasant evening,
GRB

GRB, I'm glad there is someone like you on this forum who is completely addicted/obsessed to our hobby, in addition to having a bottomless savings for which to purchase/test many different brands of detectors/detector accessories. I have not even seen Minelab or Excelerator purchase other company's accessories to do comparison testing. I appreciate your non-biased opinion of your results, in addition to your willingness to help others on our forum.

You strive to make Tnet members better informed about their detecting choices, which enhances what we all want on this forum -- To find more treasure!!

Thank You! Get well!

Very good. Glad you are on the fast trac to recovery.

GRB, I first want to wish you a speedy recovery! Second I do appreciate the fine work on the test of these coils as I just purchased an Explorer SE yesterday and have been doing alot of reading on the new procoil from Minelab. Between your great work and Capt.SE's video's and posts I guess I better dig a bit deeper into the wallet if I wanna dig deeper coins! On a side note, I see in the pics you got the square Colorado state tax token, I found its identical twin here in Michigan early this spring, that token covered some miles!

Thanks for the informative post!

I ordered the PRO coil on Thursday and will hopefully have it here Monday or Tuesday to give it some tests. I already have a few spots that I really want to try it out in that I have hit pretty hard with the 1050.

Hi Ron, I know how you feel, it zapped me down for 10 days. It was very fun to see your comparison and field test. I am looking forward to any other testing or comparisons that you can do, because I have quite the coil collection going here now. ;D Next on my list is the little Sunray X-5. I noticed that you taped your grips up with electricians tape. Was that to protect the foam? I always feel like I am damaging the foam when my hands or gloves are dirty. Like Dan said, it's great to have a fellow TH'r on here who has the bankroll to try out all of the nice gear and report to us. You have been a HUGE help to me and I really look forward to hearing anything else you have to say about the SE.

Very nice finds! I really like the tokens that you find. Do you dig most everything when you hunt? I feel that I must be passing over tokens here because I find my fair share of silver and jewelry but never the relics like the rest of you guys. Wondering if I should start digging more unusual targets . . .

I hope you feel better soon, just like you told me, get your rest and drink plenty of fluids. :coffee2:

Great Post Buddy!!

Re: A TEST!!! Minelab PRO coil versus Excelerator's SEF 10x12 coil---

Thanks Guys!
It was my pleasure doing the comparison!
Actually, I enjoy doing these sort of things as much, if not more than the hunt!

Captain SE!
No, you've got me pegged wrong!
My wife and I struggle the same as everyone else. It's about priority; that's all.
I've always taken my hobbies way too seriously. And, I'm always suspicious of the current hype pertaining to
my hobby at present. Sometimes, a man has to do what a man has to do to determine things for he-self. :)

SlipperyJack!
That is a cool token; my first like it.
At first, I thought it was anything but aluminum.
Wish it were. Good luck with you new SE; you'll grow to love it.

Mark!
How are you feeling these days? It's just plain weird you and I came down with this stuff almost at the same time!
Coils, we can't do without them as your detector is only as good as its shoe! You'll like SunRay's X-5 inch.
If you order up a lower rod, I do recommend getting the TALL MAN model; it rattles less and supports more. :)
No, I don't dig everything but if in doubt about a target I do. Most of the time, it's junk. Sometimes, in
order to discover the older targets one needs to slow way down and listen, digging those broken sounds.
You just never know what lies beneath. The electrician's tape is easier to clean than the foam. I don't like dirty equipment.
As you know, once you get the foam dirty it's almost impossible to clean. Plus, I always wear gloves MD'ing and I have found the foam wears out much too quickly if left unprotected.

I'll be doing another comparison this week; Minelab's PRO against Excelerators SEF 12x15.
Keep swinging my T-Net friends!
GRB
