Well, I spent a week at Oak Island, NC. Had a great time, went MDing at least an hour a day. My finds included:
$13.00 (even!) in Clad.
a #43 race car
2 fishing weights
1 bullet
1 earing (gold?)
1 toe ring
1 key ring (Sun Cruise Casino)
1 part of a fishing reel
1 token (got my heart beating fast, saw the stars and eagle, flipped over and saw "NO CASH VALUE")
1 iPod nano 2GB with ear buds
Pulled the iPod out of the case and saw a name engraved on it. Powered it up, had 498 songs on it. (most of which I liked!) Figured $150 for the iPod, $20 for the Phillips ear buds, $10 for the leather cover and 498 songs x $0.99 each = $673. This person sure must be missing this. I felt it was a long shot, but after checking the song list, I found several UNC band songs on it, so I figured the owner was from NC. (Oak Island is almost all vaction homes, so really could have been anyone from anywhere in the country!) Ran a search online for the name engraved, but searched only in NC. Found 3 matches, 1 was listed to a 21 year old in Southport, (only 7 miles from Oak Island). No phone number listed, only a street name with no house number. Ran just the last name for the same town. Found a listing with the same street, but included a phone number and house number. So I called, left a vaige message. "Hi my name is Joe, I found something at the beach on Oak Island with the name ........ on it, though it might belong to someone you know. If she recently lost something at the beach, please call me"
2 days later, the girl called and left a message. She said she had message to call my number, as I found something that may belong to her. She said "I really hope it's my iPod!" So, I called her back, she said she thought someone stole it, but it must have fallen out of her beach bag. I told her I would gladly send it to her. She could not believe anyone would take the time to track someone down to return something. Especially when there is only a name on it and no other information. She was very thankful, and it is on it's way back to her as I type this.
I really thought the token was going to be something, as it came out stars and eagle side up. After a few minutes wiping it off, I was really excited, I turned it over to see what it could be and what year it was from... and all I found was "NO CASH VALUE" Ahhhh!
Oh well, had a blast anyway.
I did meet up with another detectorist from the area, went out 2 days with him (as I have done in the past) and met a father and son from Penn who where there doing some underwater detecting on their vacation. It's always nice to meet fellow hobbyists and exchange a few stories.
