Ace 250 off to Playa Del Carmen

Off to Playa for a week in April and resurrected the Ace 250 after 2 yrs in the closet. Headphones do not work anymore but I bought a pair of ear buds with volume control. Sound is coming through loud and clear but the volume control doesn't lower at all. I've tried 2 pair and both the same. Does volume control only work if you use Garrett headphones??

any in line vol.control should work.some of the real cheapos they barely work
