That's a tough one for sure. That style has been around a long time, and they still make them just like that today.
It sure looks like that one has some age to it, though.
Good luck in determining the age. Perhaps the handle style will help some.

Thanks input. I'll mark this one solved as early RR era.

The red paint practise apparently dates back quite a bit.

Can someone explain how the handle is inserted. Typically with an axe or pick, you insert the end of the handle (thinner end) into the sleeve and drop it through so the thicker end will lock in place at the head. But as you can see, with the brush axe in the original post (not mine below!) the curved blade is in the way so you can't drop the thinner end of the handle through. Anyone have any pictures of this with the handle set up?

And another thing, look at mine pictured below. The sleeve is on the outside of the curve. Any pictures of my style with handle on? Why is there a little hole on the corner of the head? Is that for a cable attachment?
