Hi all. I believe this is a drilled shank pewter button. Found today in a cornfield that has given me KG2's and LC's. It is very brittle and a bit chipped off when I was cleaning it with a soft toothbrush. Can anyone give an age or even verify the find please?

I saw your other post....

Here's my thoughts, pewter button with civilian design on the front

Not a drilled shank, iron shank since rotted away, two small indentations reveal that; age would be late 1700s

Thank you very much IH. I was hoping someone very knowledgeable like yourself would answer. Your ID on the shank makes sense. Were these something that would have been made at home, or a very generic item made available at a low price? They don't seem to be for someone of wealth.

I can't say about the origin; but I have found some myself on some old sites that were similar, so more than likely a generic design for the time they were used

You know, anytime we find pewter buttons like that on a site we stick around, it's the nice age that gives us some of our older finds, although Rev War era is what we like sometimes these predate that timeframe

And for the record, I'm in no way an expert, I just keep my eyes open and remember things that I can use someday to help me with my own finds, and I'm only too happy to share what I've picked up along the way

A willingness to share is greatly appreciated by me. Knowledge is not impressive if only used to make oneself look important. I really wish the farmer would plow this field, but unfortunately, people stole crops from him the last time he did, so I have to make do with the very few finds I can get after hunting this one many times. Again, your help is VERY much appreciated.

Looks old to me OD!! In our area, the pewter ones generally show a lot of ground action. HH, Q.
