I know this is really a stretch ... but I found this oil paint tub this morning and have reason to believe it may belong to a VERY prominent 1800's Hudson Valley (NY) painter. Can anyone help me justify that its from the 1860's ??

Thanks!

I can't give you the age of that tube, but the paint tube was invented in 1841, which superseded glass syringes and pig bladders. Breezie

A lot of different products used lead tubes until the 1960's or later...I recall tooth paste, ointments, oil paints, acrylic paints, and the like.

The use of oil paint in metal tubes was invented around 1841...mostly lead and tin...

Hope that helps...however there is no way to confirm it's age unless there is a manufacturer,s name which can assist in dating the product...

For instance, jewelry made by Tiffany can be dated if certain addresses are a part of the name...ie, Tiffany of Paris...etc...
