I'm going to be flying to Mexico to escape the snow and cold here in New Hampshire (for a week). I've never flown with my detector and I'm wondering what the rules are regarding this. The airline sites seem to indicate that I could carry it on, which I would certainly prefer to checking it in. But what real-life experiences have folks encountered with this? Thanks for any input!

Did you call the airlines you would be flying on? I think that's where I would start. Personally I haven't flown with a detector so I couldn't help ya with that.

Thanks Chris. I have only looked at what's listed as "OK" on their website. I just want to be sure that it doesn't deviate from how things really happen at the airport.

Benny!

This has been adressed here a bunch of times... everyone always says it's fine and not a problem.

Have fun and be careful!

I've flown with my detector and have never had a problem. I always do check it and don't do carry on. I never tried to carry it on, I wouldn't want to make a scene when I start pulling pieces and parts out of my bag if they decided to check it out. Just my opinion. I'm glad I've taken it along although I always get distracted by being in a nice new WARM place and only have detected a few places and not whole heartly.
Good luck..

I've never had a problem, and I've always checked them in.

:) May the sun shine warmly on your cold NH bones :)

of course I'm not jealous

From the land of the Bluenose.....have had experience on both sides of the coin in this matter sir. have travelled on the plane many a times and my suggestion is to pack it in your checked in luggage and surround it with clothing. never had a problem till I tried Cuba......got in once and next time they seized it and gave my detectors back when I was leaving.

On the other side i work security at the Halifax International Airport and have never seen a problem with detectors going on board through preclearance. Have a great trip.

Thanks all! That's relieving information. I'll even drop my paranoia of stuffing it in my checked in bag. :)

My son recently played pool at the Reno Open and I had called the airlines and also the security at the airport he was flying from. They both said he could carry his que on in the case. When he arrived they wouldn't let him carry it on and he had to pay the extra $25 to check it in. Thank goodness he had just bought a hardcase.

So I would suggest it is best to just plan on checking it in with your luggage surrounded by clothes.

I'm planning on flying to one of the southern states and they said I could do a carry on. I've got 2 detectors going with me and the case is 13"X19"X6". I have them broken down to fit along with 3 coils, a pinpointer, camcorder, headphones, batteries, etc. No diggers--they'll be checked in w/clothes. The batteries (you might want to check on their regulations about them), will be new in the blister pack. If they want me to test the detecors, I just have to plug the coil in and turn it on. No need to assemble the whole thing. Will wrap the controls in bubble wrap and have cut foam to cover the inside of the case if they need to go as check in.

Hi All. I'm back and everything went smoothly, having disassembled my detector and wrapped it in clothes in my checked-in luggage. Thanks for the suggestions! I only found one silver earring for jewelry (which always goes to my girlfriend). I found about $30 worth of Peso's (which mostly got spent, so only a few left for the photo) and a few Euro's. I didn't see a single other metal detector while down there, so I thought I would have found more... but part of the problem was that the resorts in the area are all-inclusive type places, so there's no need for folks to carry cash.
Almost every beep on my beach was a coin, but I had to name the neighboring resort beaches by what I found on them; penny beach, pull-tab beach, bottle cap beach, and ketchup-packet beach.

Great, more Mexican money to get lost here! At least you could have used the ketchup had you brought it back!
happy hunting!

I tried! But the US Customs confiscated the ketchup. :icon_jokercolor:
