Morning,

I spent a couple of hours sunday digging in my paleo spot. Moved much dirt and was about to give up for the day when this little beauty rolled out. Its an Albany spokeshave.

Dr. Clarence Webb classified this type which is chipped all over instead of having one side with cortex remaining as a "refined" spokeshave. Anyhow its made of a nice heat treated chert. Albany scrapers of this type are from the San Patrice culture. Notice the San Pat base on the point.

When I first found this type of thing, I thought it was a broken arrowhead. It was only after Dr. Webb looked at my collection that he set me straight. They are pretty rare to find in my location, but welcomed when I do.

Happy Hunting,

Atlantis

Edgefield are similar, but a totally different area and culture. Edgefield are found over east and found in association with Bolens. Albany are more known for LA, TX and some have been found northwards of that.

Man that is just a cool looking tool. I have seen hooked shaped scrappers but none like that.Thats worth a day of digging for sure. Great pictures too.

thanks for clarifying that neanderthal, always learning from this site and everyones collective knowledge. Here's one I found very similar to dorkfish's top middle piece, nice frame of spokeshaves fish, real nice. I found the second one on a paleo site. p.s. not trying to hijack your thread Atlantis.

Gives me a hand cramp just thinking about it. Nice piece, but why don't they just call it a San Patrice spokeshave?

Nice find Atlantis 8) I'd never heard of a spokeshave, but I'm in the southeast is maybe why, thanks for the info.

Cool spokeshave, do you think it was made from a broken San Patrice?, or intentionally made as a spokeshave.

Just a thought.

Maybe the arrowhead maker had too many peyote buttons for lunch?
