I was looking at it under a loop and see that on small areas there appears to be flaking. Almost appears to be a layer of silver coming off that is darker than the base metal. It has been in archival flips since purchased. Any idea what causes this? Images are attached. It was purchased from a well known dealer so authentication is not an issue .Thanks

Authentication is always a primary issue.
For starters, have your dealer give you a Certificate of Authentication.

Sorry man, that looks like silver plating flaking off, not patina. I think you need to have a discussion with whomever sold it to you.

ancient coins have been known to have been silvered. where the people of that time would silver plate bronze coins to pass them off as simular silver ones of a higher denomination, but in this case i dont think this coin was made in bronze and therfore i think its countereit
