Over the past year I have found a large collection of bullets and shells while metal detecting. Everything from .75 and ,69 musket balls, Minnie Balls, .40-82 Winchester carbine, pistol bullets, and many others. Prior to 1960 shotgun shells were paper on a brass base. As many have you have discovered, when the paper rots off the base they react like good targets. After nails, my number one problem. They are somewhat interesting as they have been charted by style and date so they can be site diagnostic. Coastal wetlands have always been hunted for waterfowl and plenty of deer around. I've found a couple of all brass Winchester 12 gauge and I'm wondering if this slug with wadding attached is a match. I have found these slugs without the wadding before. Pretty big screw holds it on. Winchester made these 12 gauge all-brass shotgun shells beginning in 1878 until 1949.

I'd say they do not go together. The rifled shotgun slug is newer than the brass case. Gary

Lots of ammo around here also. I believe Toddspoint is correct on that! I don't view them as a problem but they do keep me busy. Sound like good targets every time. There are some pretty good reference sites for dating them. The land around me was sparsely populated(still is) and has been hunted from when man first arrived here to present day.

The Brenneke style slug you found has been in use since around 1900, so it is not out of the realm of possibility that it originated from your brass shell.

Interesting finds! :icon_thumleft:
