Almost a cache...here's a fun hunt story...

OK,

As you can see, it was NICE today!
pic from truck.webp

I went to a house built in the 1880's that a friend of mine owns. I have found a lot of clad, and a lot of severely rusted iron (square nails, horse shoes, knife blades, etc) even found a 1860's Roger's Nickle Silver spoon. It has been fun to hunt there (only three times). I was hunting near the big trees around the cellar, when I got that good old R2D2 making a baby sound. Everything from silver to iron. So, I began digging.
About 6" down I hit a brick, an old brick (8" by 4").

Then I hit a lot of river stones (here they are rearranged outside of the hole).

Under that, I hit two jar lids! I was having a heart attack! (One is a "Presto" lid, the other a Ball)

I just KNEW I had a cache, but all I found was... this pile
stuff from hole.webp

and this blue glass (along with some other glass pieces) Says AYER on the bottom...

And what looks like a metal knife handle...

But, no cache. But the hole got pretty darn BIG (can you tell I was excited?).

Also found a 68 Rosie dime with a weird S (gonna post in "what is it")???

Not where the D is on the other...

And a smashed tin cup (also gonna look for ID in "what is it")???

Anyway, thanks for lookin' guys/gals, you're all great and I hope you have better luck than I. It was still a whole lot of fun riding that rush while digging the hole! Anyone else thought they found a cache before?

I know what your saying about those jar lids Tom, I dug 5 more of them at the vacant lot I'm working and every time I got that feeling of a cache waiting to be discovered.
It sure gets you going.

Great pictures, keep the faith man, your cache awaits.

Wonder if it was a Bayer aspirin bottle? Nice finds, WTG.

Re: Almost a cache...here's a fun hunt story...

OK this is going to sound strange but maybe it was a hippie camp going to or coming from San Francisco. Well thats all i can come up with....aa

Re: Almost a cache...here's a fun hunt story...

Hey, I'd say you did find a cache. Maybe not the one you were specifically looking for, but those items let you know you're in a good spot to find some cool stuff. I would suggest you keep hitting that area up...

Re: Almost a cache...here's a fun hunt story...

post that dime in "coins" posts, never seen sone, very cool

Re: Almost a cache...here's a fun hunt story...

hi tom That brick you found is infact a standard hand-moulded red clay brick.Notice the difference is shades of colour on the out-side of it.This means the brick was not fired in a kiln under a constant temperature.bricks of this type were stacked in circle around a large open fire.Mit be part of an older structure.say 1840 Congrats on your coin

Re: Almost a cache...here's a fun hunt story...

look at other dimes they all have "js" on them its the designer initials. js- stands for John R. Sinnock
congrats on a great and fun hunt

Re: Almost a cache...here's a fun hunt story...

My heart would have been beating outside of my chest at that point....I am seriously thinking I might need to have an oxygen bottle in the car just in case I ever find that big cache one day...LOL

Re: Almost a cache...here's a fun hunt story...

still nice digs, you had me at the edge of my seat lol

Re: Almost a cache...here's a fun hunt story...

I've found a Ball's jar lid too....so I know how your "rush" feels....lol......It sounds like you had a good time and that makes the hunt worth it. :) I bought one of those digging tools you have but I'm not strong enough to push it into the ground.
Thanks for sharing.

Good look on your next hunt.

Nice post! HH, Mike

Re: Almost a cache...here's a fun hunt story...

That's looks like one bad digging tool. Where'd you get it?
I think I'd have #%$* when I got to the jar lid. Oh, well...

This site's sure full of people with answers!!! I knew the thing about the initials on the dime but not the hair tonic bottle. These folks are GOOD!!!!

Re: Almost a cache...here's a fun hunt story...

Thanks everyone!
I am gonna go back today, andhopefully I will have more to post tonight.

Great pictures, keep the faith man, your cache awaits.
Dan W Wa. Thanks, I think the pics make the story, definitely worth the effort.
Wonder if it was a Bayer aspirin bottle? Nice finds, WTG.
Fisher, Thanks! That's what I thought at first (almost threw it away 'till I saw the blue), but after closer inspection I am certain it's AYER. If you look real close, the "B" would be WAY to far to the left to be symmetric and I would have to be able to see some of it on the remaining glass.

TT, I thought it was just an old steel beer can, out rolled 8 silver dollars. :o I'm gonna have to check all of those cans I dug yesterday!!!
OK this is going to sound strange but maybe it was a hippie camp going to or coming from San Francisco.WTF??? LMAO! You're awesome aabattery.
I'd say you did find a cache.I would suggest you keep hitting that area up...
Godisnumber1, I didn't think of it like that...good point. I am going back today!

Chong, thanks for the suggestion, but it was ID'd in like two seconds in the "What is it" forum! Makcaydon got it for me. THANKS!
Might be part of an older structure, say 1840 Congrats on your coin.
Thanks for the info on the brick Tinpan. It would make since for them to use a brick from the 1840's. A forty year old brick isn't very old, and people weren't wastefull then. Thanks!

Poppa19, Thanks! I am learnin'!
I might need to have an oxygen bottle in the car.
Pocket Treys, I about needed on just for the lids!
still nice digs, you had me at the edge of my seat lol
Brideendfarm, thanks, nothin' beats a good story! lol
It sounds like you had a good time and that makes the hunt worth it.
Pepper, I agree! And, that darn weeder tip sometimes makes it hard to push in, I have to put my weight into it unless the ground is wet, but it seems to move the rocks just fine.

Thanks Bavaria Mike!
Thanks Nu2poo, I'll check it out!
Here you go Big Cheif! http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,143378.new.html
And thanks all.
