I saw where they had filled in the dirt from putting in a sewer line at the old high school that was built in 1916 this evening. So I drove home grabbed the CTX to try and get a few minutes of hunting in before it got dark. Followed the fill dirt behind the school and got a nice high tone in the gravel, popped out a crusty merc. Got home and started cleaning it up and I see what I thought was 1916. Cleaned it a bit more and sure enough 1916!!! My adrenaline was flowing as I started cleaning the back looking for the mint mark.....boo, hiss, damn it!! 1916 Plain Merc, so so close this time. Anyway, it was a good way to end a good day of hunting, managed a couple of silver dimes, some wheats and some other cool stuff.

Sorry about upside down pic, I cannot get it to get with the program ???

Very nice merc you found! That always makes it a good hunt! Congratulations!

Nice Merc. Same thing happened to me last winter in Apache Junction, Az. Dug a 1916 but couldn't grow a D on it. Still gets the blood pumping till you get it cleaned enough to see. Congrats.

That would get you excited, congrats on the merc

Wow, still over 100 years old, Congrats!

Any Merc is a very nice find. Sorry that yours didn't have the elusive "d" on it. Congrats.

I really like Mercury Dimes. Nice to see that you popped a few marbles out too.
Congratulations

Congrats on that Merc. Digging a 1916 will get your blood pumping. I still go into the safe to check mine periodically to see if that magical letter D shows up on the back.
