Alternative Belt

I see miners wearing something that looks like a rope as a belt..something that got tied tight around the waist.

There is a good example in this neat picture below...Although it looks like he is almost having to hold his pants up in this picture.





What was this called? Rope belt?
And how would he quickly untie it when there was the need?
Not too many buttons or buckles on his clothes.
