I am looking to make my first detector purchase. Live in Sitka, Alaska and travel throughout Alaska. Primary reason for buying a detector is nugget shooting. Southeast Alaska is geologically young and contains some hard rock gold. I also do some prospecting in the Circle Mining District in Alaska. The ground has fairly high mineralization there. To further complicate things, my partner wants a machine that will also work as a relic hunter in Southeast Alaska as well as the mineralized soil of the South Dakota Black Hills. Now I know this is an impossible request. I know that whatever machine I go with will have strengths in one area and weaknesses in another. Again, the primary purpose for the purchase is nugget hunting.

I am new to this. I would like to keep my purchase to around $1,000 US. I am currently considering Whites GMT, Gold Bug 2, and the Minelab Eureka Gold. Please offer some assistance.

Look at a White's MXT

I think the MXT would fit what you are looking for. It has relic mode, prospecting mode, and coin and jewelry mode. I cant tell you anything about using it for prospecting as I have'nt got to use it for that but I love using this machine. I think it is very easy to operate and even though it is a high end detector it is still easy enough to operate for a beginner.

Hi and welcom bruce'

I also have an MXT and have found 2 nuggets useing it where we go panning on vacation in Va. The area is heavy black sand and hot rocks. Had a lot of noise hunting with the standard coil and switched to a DD coil for my last trip and it worked like a champ! This is a great detecter but if I had to buy it again I would chose the GMT and still opt for a DD coil. The GMT is a gold hunter but but changing your levals a little it will hunt relics and coins in these given areas. within this price range I don't think you'll find a better detecter.

There are hundreds of pages of posts by Alaskan miners using detectors in alaska at bb.bbbboy.net/alaskangoldforum Alaska is tough and lots of pulse type or Lobo or GB@ country.Tons a casched pages and real life experienced miners with POUNDS and pounds of righteous nugget pics too from last two summers.Try it out.Tons a au 2 u 2-John

My GMT GoldMaster came with the DD coil and it seems to work quite well. Now if I could only get the time to go out more! Fred
